Tax deductions: Germany

Disclaimer: The below is not legal advise, - you should always consult with your locale tax office about how to obtain a tax deduction

Donations for German charities  are tax deductible if they

  • voluntarily and without compensation
  • for tax-deductible purposes
  • made to tax-exempt organizations and
  • you get a tax receipt.

You are responsible for putting the donation on your tax reporting, it does not happen automatically.  It should be put under the special items section.

All charities on BetterNow qualify for tax deductions, as this is a requirement for using our platform.

How to prove your donation

Donations under 200€

For donations below 200€ you should contact the charity you have donated to, and get a special made tax receipt issued.

For donations above 200€

For donations above 200€ you should contact the charity you have donated to, and get a special made tax receipt issued.

How much can I obtain in tax deductions

Donations to religious or ecclesiastical institutions or charitable organizations may not exceed 5% of annual income. For self-employed, the limit is 2% of annual turnover. For Charitable, scientific and cultural purposes, the maximum is 10% of the annual income.

Total donations may not exceed 20% of its annual income. If larger sums donated, it is possible for the donations to be "carried forward" in the years to come, and thus be tax-deductible.
